ARM Support

Higher Availability, Reliability and Maintainability (ARM) offers both increased operational capability and reduced support costs. Poor Availability, Reliability and Maintainability can result in reduced operational effectiveness of a system, a greater risk of accidents and higher cost of ownership as well as a considerable increase in customer dissatisfaction. Good ARM characteristics are inherent in a design and cannot be a last minute add-on. Money spent on ARM engineering early in a project is an investment to realise increased operational capability and lower support costs – spend to save!

Safety Assurance Services has experience of applying key standards, such as Defence Standards 00-25, 00-40, 00-41, 00-42, 00-43, 00-44, Military Standards 1629, 470 and British Standard BS5760. In addition to this Rhys helped to develop Def Stan 00-42 Part 3 on the R&M Case and is a member of the IMechE Committee developing strategies, guidance and Policy on R&M.

The following is a list of typical safety programme activities for which Safety Assurance Services can provide assistance:

  • Formulation of a cost effective reliability programme.

  • Production and use of appropriate R&M Requirements based on stakeholder needs and trade-offs with parameters such as cost, performance and Project Risk.

  • R&M Modelling and Prediction.

  • R&M trade off studies.

  • Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and Fault Tree Analysis.

  • Reliability Centred Maintenance.

  • Reliability Testing and Demonstration Programmes.

  • Defect Reporting and Corrective Action Systems (DRACAS).

  • Production of System R&M Assurance documentation (e.g. R&M Case Report, Software Reliability Case).
