Safety Assurance Services Limited Equipment safety has become a particularly prominent issue in recent years. Influencing factors include a number of recent high profile accidents, general increased awareness by the public of safety issues, new UK and European safety legislation and for military equipment the loss of Crown immunity. A rigorous process of safety assurance is essential in order to ensure that the potential for equipment to enter use with unacceptable safety characteristics is minimised. Safety Assurance Services (SAS) Limited based in Farnham, Surrey, was set up in 1998 specifically to provide a cost effective, personal and professional service in safety assurance; primarily focusing on functional safety in relation to safety related systems. SAS offers a very competitive fee rate that does not compromise the quality of service offered. SAS provides safety support from safety assessments relating to a specific issue through to effecting a complete safety programme resulting in a Safety Case. SAS has worked at all phases of project lifecycles, from establishing safety requirements, providing the Design Safety Case and on to providing the User with the Operational Safety Case. The Partners, Yuri Tempest-Woods, Steve Brooks and Rhys David, are Chartered Engineers, Members of the IEE / IMechE and each have over 15 years relevant functional safety experience gained in premiere consultancy environments. SAS has multi discipline experience relevant to mechanical, electrical, electronic as well as software intensive systems. SAS can also provide the services of a highly qualified (MIOSH) health and safety practitioner for the specific consideration of these safety issues. SAS has been involved in safety programmes at all levels, from systems of systems down to the equipment level. SAS has considerable experience in producing Safety Cases for both military and industrial systems. SAS has also developed some innovative tools and processes to enhance their ability to provide quality safety support. In particular, SAS has developed a software tool called the Safety Criteria Calculator (© SAS, 2002) for deriving safety criteria in accordance with JSP454 and Defence Standard 00-56.
